The Story
In 1998, Citizens of Leawood voted on a Parks Bond issue.  This bond issue was intended to improve parks Citywide, not just Ironwoods Park.  The 1998 Parks Bond passed, which resulted in approximately $5.2 million in improvements to Ironwoods Park, essentially creating the park as we know it today. The improvements, including the amphitheater stage, concrete pad and walkways, and power transformer, were completed in 2004. This exhausted the $100,000 originally earmarked for the amphitheater in the 1998 Parks Bond.

Although members of the Leawood Stage Company in conjunction with the Leawood Parks Department began to plan for a bigger facility as early as 2001, they introduced a large-scale concept in 2008.  This concept has not been officially approved as a project for the City, however it was “accepted” by the City Council, which authorized fundraising for the $2.3 million stage portion of the project.  Additionally in 2010, Leawood City Council approved Leawood Parks and Recreation’s plans to move forward with the construction of a $350,000 bathroom facility. This project exhausts the remaining non-earmarked funds from the 1998 bond.  Interestingly enough, this bathroom project has been referred to as “Phase I” of the expanded amphitheater project. Stylistically, it resembles the new amphitheater plans, and unlike any of the existing buildings in the park. According to Leawood Parks and Recreation Department and City Council Members, the amphitheater project is not official.

Simply put, we need to Save Ironwoods Park!

We cannot allow the City of Leawood, Leawood Parks Department, and the Leawood Stage Company to pave over a huge amount of the usable open greenspace in our largest park to develop a multi-use commercial building. Join us now!
